GST Registration: Common Mistakes That Delay Approval

A GST application should clear in five to seven working days. In practice, a large share of applications get stuck in a query-and-resubmit loop that stretches well past that — almost always over the same few avoidable mistakes.

Address proof that doesn't match the application

The most common rejection reason. If you've entered the registered office as a rented space, the proof must include a rent agreement and a No Objection Certificate from the owner — a rent agreement alone is not sufficient. If the premises are owned, the electricity bill or property tax receipt must be in the applicant's name, not a family member's.

Photograph and signature mismatches

The uploaded photograph must match the ID proof, and the digital signature or e-sign must belong to the same authorised signatory named in the application. Applications filed by a consultant using their own DSC instead of the applicant's are a frequent, entirely preventable rejection.

Wrong constitution type selected

Selecting "Proprietorship" when the actual structure is a Partnership, or vice versa, seems like a minor slip but restarts the verification process from scratch, since the document checklist differs for each constitution type.

Bank account details added too early — or too late

GSTN wants the current account details, not a savings account, and it wants them added within 45 days of registration if not available at the time of filing. Adding a savings account, or missing the 45-day window entirely, both trigger a suspension notice.

HSN/SAC codes that don't match the stated business activity

If the application describes a trading business but lists a services-only SAC code (or the reverse), the officer will raise a query rather than approve on the spot. It's a five-minute fix once flagged, but it's a fix that costs a full review cycle.

The common thread: almost none of these are complex judgment calls — they're checklist items that a first-time filer has no way of knowing to check for. Our GST Registration service runs every application through this exact checklist before it's submitted, which is why our first-pass approval rate stays close to the five-to-seven-day window GSTN quotes.
